Territory

The geographic area in which a franchisee or distributor is protected — or not — from same-brand competition.

Territory may be exclusive, protected, or merely a marketing area with no exclusivity. Encroachment, ghost kitchens, and nearby company stores can affect four-wall sales even when a map looks clear. Buyers should read the current franchise agreement, not only a broker summary. For non-franchise businesses, “territory” may mean a route, service area, or informal market, which is easier for competitors to enter.
