Same-store (or comparable-store) sales measure organic demand at existing locations. A chain can grow total revenue by opening stores while same-store sales are flat or down. Buyers of a single shop still use the idea: is this address growing, or was last year a one-time spike? POS and seasonal calendars help interpret the trend.
